First cohort graduates from PSM Cyber Stars Programme at Liverpool FC

New careers in IT open up for former footballers

Friday 22 ^nd July saw the very first students graduate from the PSM Cyber Stars Programme at an event held at the AXA Training Centre, the training facility for one the world’s most iconic football clubs, Liverpool FC.

For those young players who do not go on to have a career in the professional game, career paths can be difficult. Recognising the issue, Phoenix Sport and Media Group (PSMG) have opened the ‘state of the art’ PSM Digital Academy which is designed to help current and retired players into a career in cyber security. This week saw the first seven students graduate with many of them already lined up with their first roles in the sector.

Founded by a group of Premier League players who are determined to make a positive difference, PSM Digital Academy and the Cyber Star Programme will be providing technical skills training as well as help in transitioning from sport. Located at Silverstone race circuit, the courses will be delivered in a modern training facility on site, or virtually, dependent on the preference of the learner. The courses will be in offensive, defensive and threat intelligence and will help plug a significant skills gap in this specific area of the cyber industry.

This is a new partnership between PSMG, CompTIA, BIT Training and Hack The Box and it’s tasked with delivering the programme under the name Cyber Stars.

The first cohort launched in late April 2022 and was oversubscribed which is an indication of the level of demand for this type of learning. Looking forward, the Academy will be inviting applications from other sports and focus groups including cricket, rugby, and athletics. As part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion, they are also hoping to offer focused cohorts for female players and for Paralympians.

The course has been designed to go beyond traditional training and has been tailored to help sports stars excel. PSM Cyber Stars Programme has also entered into partnerships with cyber employers who are looking to interview successful graduates for roles in this fast-growing sector.

Commenting on the new projects, Carly Barnes CEO of PSMG said: “We’re incredibly proud to have successfully launched this course and even more proud to see the very first students graduate at such a well renowned venue. These new graduates are about to start on brand new career paths in the IT industry and we look forward to seeing how they progress as the months and years move on.”

One former Liverpool FC Academy player that graduated from the course this week is Josh Sumner, who said: “It was devastating to leave Liverpool FC at the age of 19 after being there for seven years because football was all I knew. I’m now 28 years old and I can safely say that the PSM Cyber Stars Programme has set me on a new and exciting career path in IT. It was always something that I was interested in but this have given me the opportunity to take the first real life step in to the sector.”

The workshop delivered by PSM, BIT Training, Hack The Box and CompTIA is impressive and we’ve had real interest in this course from our alumni. Axis Stars, the private community for professional Sports & Entertainment Stars co-founded by former Premier League Player & French International Louis Saha has added PSMG as a new Partner organisation.

A career in Sport or Entertainment can be very exciting and rewarding but there is another side that is not often shown but unfortunately occurs all too regularly. Goal-scoring legend Andrew Cole is thrilled to announce a radical new education partnership that he believes will help to transform players' lives in both the immediate and long-term.

The former England and Manchester United star is co-founder of Phoenix Sport and Media Group (PSMG), an organisation committed to the welfare and support of footballers both during and after their careers.

Education is at the heart of their ambition. This focuses on delivering knowledge that protects players from the sharks and rogues looking to cash in on their financial naivety, or providing learning that prepares them for senior leadership positions in the business of sport once their performance career ends.

Cole said: “I am delighted that we have agreed with VSI Executive Education to run a series of mini-MBA programmes for both current and retired players. In many cases footballers have been out of education since their school days and these three or four day programmes will give them a taste of life back in the classroom.

Some programmes will be for younger men and women who are still playing the game and will be designed to help their immediate needs. Other will be geared to longer term career ambitions.”

VSI Executive Education has enjoyed significant success educating sports industry professionals on MBA, Masters and non-accredited programmes for much of the last decade.

Other notable Premier League alumni involved at boardroom level with PSMG are Michael Thomas, who famously scored Arsenal’s last gasp goal against Liverpool to secure the league title in 1989, and Brian Deane, the Premier League’s first ever goal scorer and Chairman of PSMG.

PHOENIX ANNOUNCE GROUND-BREAKING NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB ACADEMY

Phoenix Sport & Media Group are delighted to announce a ground-breaking new partnership to deliver training to Liverpool FC Academy alumni.

Former Liverpool midfielder & Phoenix Co-founder Michael Thomas is helping to lead a ground-breaking education project in support of the club's ex-Academy players.

Thomas, who made 163 appearances for the Reds during his six-and-a-half years at Anfield and scored in the 1992 FA Cup final victory, returned to the club last year to work as a mentor with the younger age groups at the Academy in Kirkby.

Now, he is aiming to help former LFC youth players just as much as the current crop.

Following his retirement, Thomas co-founded Phoenix Sport & Media Group alongside other ex-professionals, including Andy Cole and Brian Deane, with the objective of helping today’s generation avoid the pitfalls which struck him during his career.

The LFC Academy has now joined with Phoenix in a unique partnership aimed at the club’s alumni.

It offers training and education courses to all former Academy players in areas such as financial education, practical business skills and social media, in an effort to help participants avoid potential issues while also possibly helping them towards a second career.

The online courses, delivered by ex-pros, have already started, with more to come during the next few months.

“We had some very bad advice from people we trusted. It was a body blow,” said Thomas. “We started investigating this and got together to put something back in for the players of today.

“We want to help the next generation so no-one else gets burned. We care about them.”

The company was founded in 2016 and has grown into various departments, including investor rescue – ‘salvaging the investments of those who have been badly advised’ – and expanded into training.

Thomas is passionate about making sure players know how to manage their lives, with careers often short-lived.

“In football, people think it’s a long career but it’s gone quickly. I went to some dark places when I retired and you need to keep yourself busy, which is easier said than done,” he said.

Thomas added: “When you become part of Liverpool FC, you are part of a family. The team at the Academy are really amazing and really care about their players.

“Through these courses we can also hopefully help make a positive difference to the pathways that our former players take who are no longer at the club on a day-to-day basis.

“This is a very proud moment for me and my company.”

Phil Roscoe, Liverpool FC’s Academy player care manager, is excited about the opportunities offered by the collaboration.

He is committed to making sure help and advice is available to any player who has been through the Academy, even though they may have left many years ago.

“We’ve been keeping in touch with our former players from the Academy for years on an informal basis but in the last year, Caitlin [Hawkins, Academy education manager] and I have managed to put all our alumni information into a more formal database, which allows for more formal and regular contact, allowing us to make big strides in reaching out to them.

“As an individual it’s always good to upskill your qualifications, especially in these uncertain times.

“When they were younger, at the Academy, education may not have been their priority – they wanted to be footballers – but these courses enable us to catch them when training and education may very much be at the top of their priority list.

“The first courses are concentrating on business but we’ll have more in other areas so hopefully they will appeal to other alumni as well.”

For the next generation of LFC Academy players, meanwhile, Thomas’ name should simply mean someone who has helped them along in their quest to be the best they can be.

“They’re great to work with, eager to learn. I’m there just to help out, pull them aside, maybe give them some little nuggets of advice.”

Footballers’ Lives is a weekly series where Richard chats to famous former players for an in-depth but light-hearted look at their careers. Phoenix chairman Brian Deane is one of the star players to feature in the first season of the podcast, which kicks off with an engaging conversation with former Arsenal and Liverpool legend – and Phoenix Group ambassador – Michael Thomas.

“One of the reasons why I started out in journalism over 20 years ago is because I’m interested in people. Everyone has a story to tell, and fans are naturally intrigued by the lives of heroes such as Michael and Brian – lads who lived the kind of dreams that supporters around the world could only ever aspire to,” said Richard, the former editor of Football Punk magazine, who presented Premier League football out in Asia from 2011 until 2018.

Surprise appearances in TV commercials for the Phoenix Team

Phoenix team members Brian Deane and Brian Wood MC are thrilled to be making surprise appearances in TV commercials this year.

Celebrating the power that football has to bring people together, Coca Cola cast our Chairman Brian Deane in their refresher advert to celebrate newly promoted clubs to the Premier League for the 2019/2020 season.

It features fans of each of the newly promoted clubs and includes some very special guest appearances.

TV cook and Norwich City director, Delia Smith, appears as a fish pie. Brian Deane — a Sheffield United hero surprises excited blades fans in a local bar and Aston Villa's Jack Grealish turns up in a barbershop. It also features Manchester United player Jesse Lingard.

And hot on the heels of the Coca Cola advert, Phoenix Ambassador Brian Wood MC has been filming the new BT Halo TV commercial which is coming out in January 2020.

We are looking forward to seeing Woody’s commercial air in the New Year. And as for Deano - “he’s back”.

Brian Wood MC talks to Derby County Football Club about teamwork and tenacity

Phoenix Sport & Media Group Ambassador Brian Wood MC was recently at Derby County Football Club speaking to Academy players on the importance of teamwork and tenacity, and how important it is to understand the club’s values.

Awarded the Military Cross for his gallant, heroic, selfless acts on the frontline to standing trial accused of war crimes, Brian Wood MC has an incredible story to share.

Brian’s career started in football. He started off on the Chelsea Football Club schoolboy programme, and was delighted to put his boots back on in the morning and to join in a training session with former player Craig Short. Former Premier League captain Short is now an U23’s coach for DCFC. Brian described Short as a “man-mountain” after contact with his tackle bag!

In the afternoon, Brian (or “Woody” as he is more affectionately known to the Phoenix team) presented an inspiring speech to the players.

Brian told his story and how, at the age of 23, he was thrust into the front line in Iraq at the infamous Battle of Danny Boy. Ambushed, he led a charge across open ground with at least 20 insurgents firing at five soldiers. On his return, he was awarded the Military Cross. However, Brian's story had only just begun. Struggling to integrate back into family life, he suffered from PTSD. Then, five years later, a letter arrived summoning him to testify at the Al-Sweady enquiry into allegations of war crimes by British soldiers during the Iraq invasion of 2003.

We’ll leave the rest of the story to be told by Brian, but DCFC were walked through his incredible journey and taken to the heart of close quarter battle. Brian also shared his unique methodology - the “Woody Way” - which draws on his life experiences to inspire and educate his audience on the importance of core values of honesty, resilience and optimism.

“The worst experiences in life can teach us the best lessons in life” said Brian. “ As I walked through the DCFC academy doors with Craig Short I instantly saw excellence. The first thing I read was ‘talent alone is not enough’. This is very true and also parallels with the military way of thinking. Meeting the players I instantly got a sense of what the club really means to them and nothing was taken for granted. That was refreshing. Putting my boots on and taking part in a training session was brilliant but my highlight was sharing my story on emotional resilience. Along with the academy director Darren Wassall, we spoke about the importance of values and what they mean. In a military institution you are driven ona daily basis by your values. I believe if you understand values you understand the bigger picture and it will help you achieve your goals / mission. An incredible time spent with DCFC.”

Craig Short reported that the talk had been both valuable and memorable for the Academy. He said:

“I have come across many inspirational speakers in my career but Brian’s story and presentation was genuinely the best I have seen. Young players can be very hard for some outside speakers to engage with at times but Brian held the room for over an hour with his recollections and amazing story on human endeavour. Brian aligned his speech with our own academy values and principles which made it very relevant and inspiring for our academy players.”

In July 2019 it was announced that Brian had been given the green light for a new movie, based on his award winning autobiography, Double- Crossed. Brian is currently continuing his tour, working on a new book and is a key member of the PSM Training team, who are keen to help increase opportunities for government funded apprenticeships for military veterans, corporations and sports teams.

Phoenix Sport & Media Group are proud to be headquartered at Silverstone Circuit in the heart of the motor sport valley.

Key members of the team spent an afternoon exploring the new Silverstone Experience Centre, next to our offices, getting up close and personal to iconic bikes and cars.

Silverstone Experience takes visitors on a thrilling 2.5 hour journey celebrating the past, present and future of Silverstone. Fascinating stories of human endeavour, great sporting rivalries and engineering innovation are told using state of the art interactive displays and iconic film and imagery The STEM-focused visitor attraction, whose mission is to ‘engage minds through motorsport’, takes visitors on an interactive journey through the past, present and future of British motor racing.

Carly Barnes, CEO of the Phoenix Sport & Media Group, who grew up in a motor sports environment and has worked in the industry for many years says:

“It was a great pleasure for me to take our team around the hanger and to understand a little more about the history of our office location. We were able to sit in cars, practice our skills as RAF pilots as well as take part in a thrilling virtual lap. We learned so much about motor racing. This is important to us as a company as it’s a key sport in which we work. We thank all the team at the Experience Centre for hosting us and look forward to taking our clients and contacts to the centre in the future. It’s wonderful to see so much motor sport history and heritage preserved and on display in such an interactive learning experience”

The £20million project has seen the rescue and refurbishment of a Second World War Wellington Bomber Hangar at the entrance to Silverstone Circuit. A grant of £9.1million was awarded to the initiative by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, which has praised its unique and inspiring blend of sport, science and history.

Key historic exhibits include Barry Sheene’s 1979 Suzuki RG500, with which he battled against Kenny Roberts at Silverstone in one of the most memorable races of 1970s, and Nigel Mansell’s British Grand Prix-winning Williams FW14B from 1992. More recent vehicles include the RB6 Red Bull with which Mark Webber took the chequered flag in the 2010 British GP and Maverick Viñales’ podium-placed 2017 Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP bike.

The Silverstone Experience is also the new home of the British Racing Drivers’ Club archive, including programmes, time sheets and signing-on documents from the 70 years of motor racing history at Silverstone. The initiative has been supported by a host of racing stars including Murray Walker, Mark Webber, Nigel Mansell, Martin Brundle and Sir Jackie Stewart, with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, sitting as its Royal Patron.The attraction has been over seven years in the making, with Sir Stirling Moss an early supporter.

Congratulations to Phoenix Chairman & Co-Founder Brian Deane as he embarks on the prestigious VSI CEO program.

Phoenix Chairman and Co-Founder Brian Deane is about to embark on a new challenge - and to expand his knowledge and education on the prestigious VSI CEO program.

At Phoenix Sport & Media Group we are passionate about helping both our clients and our own team grow and develop their skills and to embrace opportunities that can provide the necessary tools to enhance their performance.

In his position as Chairman of Phoenix Sport & Media Group, Brian was introduced to the VSI team and has accepted a position on the CEO course starting in November.

Brian is no stranger to hard work – his football career spanned a total of 21 years playing mostly in the top two divisions. He made his debut at 17 and went on to play over 700 games scoring over 200 league and cup games.

Brian played for some of the most high-profile managers of the time and used those experiences to form his own vision of how he wanted to be as a manager.

“Through observation I studied both positive and negative aspects of management” states Deane, “from which I formed my own style. One of the best things about managing was that it took me out of my comfort zone and forced me to rely on my experiences to overcome difficult situations. Whether I made the right decisions or not I grew as a person everyday.”

As a person who values learning and development, what made the football management more of a challenge was that it was based in Norway.

“Not many English managers have gone abroad to manage but I saw this as an ideal opportunity to see if I wanted it enough without being under the microscope of my home country. During this period, I challenged myself by not being afraid to talk in front of businesses and audiences on a range of topics to give people the benefit of my experiences. I immersed myself into the experience knowing from past experiences, of going to Portugal to play for Benfica, that I could always go back home if it didn’t work whilst knowing if it did it would be a great achievement for my personal development. Since then, these experiences of leaving my comfort zone have helped me in many situations. My favourite thought is that I probably have as much life and sports experience as most people I just need to find the best medium to channel it and keep developing as a person”.

Deane is keen to draw upon his vast experiences by embarking on his next challenge, The VSI CEO of a Sports Organisation programme alongside his role as Chairman and Co-Founder of Phoenix Sport & Media Group.

“For me I’m at a point in my life where because of the experiences I’ve gained it’s the natural path for me to take to align myself work wise. I can’t help but wonder sometimes when I’m in the room with CEOs what makes them different to me? What do I need to be in their position? I believe my life and sports experience has given me an educated and informed standpoint from which to explore senior management further. One thing I have learned through management is that sometimes you might be the only one in the room who doesn’t think he has the answers, but everyone knows that you have”.

Looking forward to the VSI CEO programme Deane states “I hope that the course can point me in the right direction and provide me with the necessary tools to take that next step in my career. In my former career I was used to waiting for acceptance, like scoring a goal for example and somebody’s subjective opinion meant more than it should have. Learning and understanding means having the confidence to believe in the decisions I make knowing they are also the right ones. I’m inspired for what the programme will bring, networking with senior people from across multiple sports and business adds real-world value. Through the programme I’ll be understanding the roles and responsibilities of a CEO which will develop my capabilitiesto be a CEO. I want to be able to develop as a person and learn different skill sets.

TOP TIPS FROM EX-PRO AND PHOENIX'S CO-FOUNDER

Michael Thomas, Phoenix Co-Founder and Ambassador, ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL LEGEND passes on his top money lessons for young footballers.

During my 20-year professional football career, I’ve seen too many talented former footballers and close teammates lose everything to financial schemes and scams, unscrupulous advisors, costly divorces and over-spending.

Bankruptcy amongst retired players, who have earned small fortunes during their careers, is sadly at an all-time high.

It’s no exaggeration to say it’s a silent epidemic right now amongst my generation. I've seen it happen again and again — with top international players, as well as at the lower levels. Sadly, it can happen to any of us. The reality is, young footballers are targets from the day they sign their first professional contract.

I completely get that it’s hard to understand how a Premier League footballer, earning more money in one week than some people earn in a lifetime, can end up in this position.

It’s easy to blame the player. But, the reality is that this a problem amongst professional footballers and other sportsmen and women throughout the world that needs to be addressed. Players need more advice and guidance at a young age if we are going to prevent this cycle from repeating itself again and again.

Think it can’t happen to you? You’d be surprised.

So, what lessons can I pass on from my experiences?

Here’s a few words of advice from me and the Phoenix team for young players:-

1. Watch the people around you

Shady advisors are a real problem in our industry. They can rob players of their entire earnings through financial mismanagement or worse, through mis-selling and fraud. Most footballers only find out this has happened in retirement when it’s too late and the advisers are long gone.

My advice is to realise how vulnerable you are as a footballer. Even if you think you have good advisors in place and good people around you, do you have complete control and knowledge of what they are doing with your money? If not, get it.

Take responsibility for your own money, get second opinions, understand where it’s going and make it your mission to understand everything going on around you.

2. Plan for retirement at the earliest opportunity you can.

Young footballers need to be aware that what they earn as a footballer over a 10-15 year period needs to last for 50-60 years into the future.

So, it’s vital you invest sensibly and wisely and plan ahead. Work on a solid and secure plan for preserving your money for when you’ve hung up your boots from the earliest moment you can. Think about your life beyond sport and get prepared.

3. If it’s too good to be true - it probably is.

If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that risk and reward go together. There are constant pitches at young footballers for “no brainer” opportunities coming at you from trusted people in your inner circle. If you are being pitched a big return then understand that the risk will probably be high too.

Anything that sounds too good to be true, probably is. Don’t be afraid to say no, or get a second opinion from an independent professional such as a lawyer or a Chartered Financial Planner.

4. Control your spending

Overspending can turn wealthy footballers into bankrupt footballers overnight.

Invest in assets that grow your money and provide a passive income, such as property. Watch what you are spending on depreciating assets. Luxury cars, watches and clothes generally lose value and will be worth nowhere near what you paid.

Get the balance right. Enjoy your success but balance it out with assets that will grow your wealth and set you up for the future.

5. Ignore the dressing room

Dressing rooms are where the most damage is often done. It’s only when you retire that you realise how much peer pressure you were under.

Pressure to sign up to the latest dressing room deal however is a particularly serious problem and this can lead to financial disaster. Entire dressing rooms can go bankrupt overnight from one bad scheme that spreads throughout the team like wild-fire.

I’d always recommend that before you enter any investment, get it checked out by an independent advisor. And by independent - I mean not one connected to your agent, the investment itself or the advisor recommending it.

6. Know the fees you are paying.

Make sure you demand to see all the fees and commissions that are being made by your advisors and agents. Secret commissions are illegal and are rife in the football industry and believe me it can all add up. I’ve seen investments fail purely based on the huge commissions being taken out at the front to pay agents, advisers and so on.

Speak with your advisors and read the small print in your contracts. Small fees can easily be ignored in the moment but can make a big difference over time. Break down exactly what your advisor is charging and why. A good advisor will insist you understand this and have no problem with you asking to see the detail.

7. Divorce and bad relationships will cost you

Child support from failed relationships can be far more costly for players than the average person. Football players pay hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in annual child support. Multiple children by different women can mean millions of pounds to be paid in child support payments for years.

The payments might be affordable while playing but they can become unsustainable in retirement.

Get a pre-nuptial agreement if you want to avoid being wiped out by a costly divorce. Think before you act where children are concerned. Children are an absolute gift but make sure you can afford them.

8. Get Protected

Careers in sport are unpredictable. A sudden injury or change of manager can see you experience a change of fortunes overnight.

Prepare for this. Don’t let an injury on the pitch result in a serious off-pitch financial disaster.

A good regulated independent financial adviser can ensure that you have robust insurance and arrangements in place to protect you and your family in the unfortunate event of injury or illness.

9. Budget and Plan carefully

Football careers are short by normal standards and you need to put some serious priority into planning your money and spending properly so you can safeguard your future.

You need to think about budgeting. Think about the essentials that you want to live with on a day-to-day basis and work with an advisor to calculate how much this will cost you each month. Put aside some money for fun and lifestyle purchases and then save the remaining income for your future.

All footballers need a solid financial plan and to keep to a budget that helps them prepare well for the future and life’s twists and turns. There is all sorts of sophisticated software that can help you meet your financial goals. Only use a professional advisor who insists on doing proper planning with proper software.

10. Stay away from complicated tax schemes

Something that has absolutely devastated my generation is tax schemes, sometimes known as “film schemes”. The big problem with these kind of schemes is that investigations can come several years later when you are at the end of your career. These schemes are so complex and appear to be so attractive that it’s easy to be fooled into thinking they are something that they are not.

Demands can come at you in retirement for something that happened years ago that you can’t really remember about and your advisor may be long gone, leaving you to sort out the mess on your own.

My most important tip is to listen to the stories from my generation and the devastation it has caused football families throughout the country, and avoid any kind of complicated tax scheme like the plague.

Stick to the basics and do these properly. Look at ISA’s and low risk funds that will help you grow your money in a safe and measured way. Work with advisors who help you stay tax compliant. Don’t be tempted into any complicated tax scheme. It could cost you your life’s earnings.

So these are my top tips. You have a short career as a footballer and you are more vulnerable to financial exploitation than you realise. It’s time to change the financial futures of young players and to see the next generation safeguard their earnings and enjoy peaceful and comfortable futures with their families.

Phoenix isn’t just a business for me. It’s also an opportunity for me to make a difference and to try to change things for the better for the next generation. If my experiences help prevent one young player from making the same mistakes that I and my generation weren’t prepared for, then I will be a proud man.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY TO PHOENIX AMBASSADOR ROD WALLACE

As Rod turns 50, we reflect on the highlights of his football career and his aspirations for the years ahead with Phoenix Sport & Media Group.

Football Career

Rodney Seymour Wallace began his career at Southampton as trainee in 1986 along with his twin brother Ray. Elder brother Danny had already become an established member of the Southampton first team.

On 22nd October 1988, his two brothers Danny and Ray lined up alongside him in the Southampton team in a match at The Dell against Sheffield Wednesday; this was the first time three brothers had played in the same team in English professional top-flight football.

He was quickly tipped for the top after some dazzling displays and eleven England Under-Twenty-one caps and a couple of ‘B’ caps followed.

He enjoyed a fine career at Southampton forming an exciting young strikeforce with Alan Shearer and Matthew Le Tissier, which soon attracted interest from a number of bigger clubs.

Leeds won the race to sign him, a tribunal setting the £1.6 million fee in July 1991. He helped them win the old First Division championship and Charity Shield competition a year later.

Rod won the 1993–94 Goal of the Seasoncompetition with a dribble against Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League game on 17 April 1994. His brother, Danny, had won the same award 10 seasons earlier, making them the first and, to date, only brothers to gain the accolade.

His career then went North of the Border and he added more silverware to his collection playing for Rangers. In his first season, he won the domestic treble, finishing as top scorer with 27 goals and scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Scottish cup final win over Celtic, the first cup final to be played at the fully renovated Hampden Park. The following season he was part of the squad that won the league and cup double.

Stints at Bolton and Gillingham followed.

On his day little ‘Hot Rod’s darting runs could slice open any defence. His ‘Goal of the Season’ against Tottenham Hotspur in April 1994 ranks as one of the greatest solo goals ever seen at Elland Road.

Rod’s New Beginning- His Phoenix

Like any professional footballer, Rod found the transition from football tough. He never thought about what he’d do after playing. Like so many former pro’s, he found it tough getting used to not playing football every day. But Phoenix has given Rod new purpose and meaning and he’s very positive about the future and how he wants to see Phoenix develop and grow.

The formation of Phoenix Sport & Media Group sees Rod back reunited with his former Leeds United team-mate Brian Deane. The pair have remained close since their playing days.

For Rod, the next generation are really important. Aside from wanting to help and mentor young players himself, he very much hopes to bring his daughter and son into the business in time and to make this very much a family business. As one of very few footballers who has had the experience of playing as part of the same team with his two brothers, family is everything for Rod.

Rod will be promoting our company as an Ambassador and helping to shape the services we offer to players using the benefit of the experiences and knowledge he built up during his playing career.

Rod and his brothers are big Formula One fans away from football and it was a memorable day for Rod and his family to visit Renault F1 recently with us and to take part in a pit stop challenge.

Happy 50th Rod. We are proud to have you on our team and wish you a very bright future.

The L3 and L5 Leadership and Management programmes will focus on helping learners to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to manage, organise and motivate their teams and will, following successful completion, lead to an accredited Leadership & Management Qualification.

Brian Wood MC, former Colour Sergeant, Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

Brian Wood was awarded the Military Cross, one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry in combat, by Her Majesty The Queen II, following his courageous leadership under enemy fire in Iraq.

In the heat of a lethal close quarters battle, fighting outnumbered, he seized the initiative, taking a split-second decision to lead his men into the teeth of enemy fire in the first bayonet charge by British soldiers in 25 years.

Leading from the front, he put his own life in great danger. Under his command, Brian’s men defeated the enemy without sustaining any serious casualties themselves. Their actions that day saved many other soldiers’ lives.

During a 16 year military career, Brian led British troops across the full spectrum of battle from training to fighting; from operations in the Balkans to high intensity combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Throughout his Army career he had to make life-or-death decisions, frequently in hazardous battle situations, usually under great pressure and often against the clock. There is no greater leadership challenge than motivating men to put their lives on the line. To succeed they have to know that you are a meticulous and competent planner and commander who can be trusted with their lives.

Brian’s military experience has equipped him to deliver highly inspirational and compelling sessions, sharing his experiences from the battlefield and suggesting ways that the lessons he has learnt can be applied in the corporate world.

On February 21st 2019, Brian published his first book 'Double Crossed' - he speaks powerfully and movingly about the three battles in his life, from being ambushed with no cover, to the mental battle to adjust at home, to being falsely accused of hideous war crimes. It’s a remarkable and dark curve which ends with his honour restored but, as he says, it was too little, too late.
